A Growing Nation

After the American Revolution, the newly formed United States realized that it lacked room to grow. The states created in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 were limited in size. As the population increased, more people were competing for the same amount of land. Consequently, land became more expensive, and overcrowding became an issue. The thirteen states were bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the territories of other nations. If the United States was going to have a future, it needed to increase its territory.

President Thomas Jefferson believed that for Americans to be virtuous and free, they needed to farm land. He wanted to expand westward to create more farmland. Jefferson also wanted to obtain the Port of New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River so farmers could easily transport their goods. He facilitated the purchase of New Orleans and the rest of the French territory from France in 1803 for $15 million. This new land was called the Louisiana Territory and stretched partway across the continent. It was the first step in expanding the United States.

USA is shown and different areas are highlighted. The east coast region is highlighted first and shows 1776, the middle east is highlighted next and shows 1803, the mid north and all of the east is highlighted third and 1821 is highlighted. Then all of the middle and east areas are highlighted and 1845 is shown. Next the north west area is highlighted and 1846 is shown. Then the south west area is highlighted and 1848 is shown. Last, the south part of Arizona is highlighted and shows 1853.

The purchase of the Louisiana Territory led to a pattern of westward expansion through payment, negotiations, and conflict. The United States purchased Florida from Spain with the Florida Purchase Treaty of 1821. Instead of paying Spain a set amount, the United States would pay the $5 million Americans claimed were owed to them by Spain. After Texas declared independence from Mexico, it was annexed by the United States and became an official state in 1845. Another land controversy occurred between Great Britain and the United States, as both countries claimed the Oregon region. The dispute was settled in the 1846 Oregon Treaty, which separated the countries by the line of the 49th parallel. Mexico refused to let the United States buy California and New Mexico, so the two countries eventually went to war. Because the Americans won the war, the United States was able to buy lands in the Southwest in 1848. The United States paid Mexico $10 million for an area of land in the Southwest in the 1853 Gadsden Purchase, stretching its borders from sea to sea.

Compare this poem with your vision of America today. Using supporting evidence, answer this question: How has America changed over time?

Answers

America is a much more divided nation than the poem conveys. The thought of “The American Identity” has changed. The poem conveys us as hardworkers, strong people living out their daily lives. Today, we could hardly be considered as such by other nations. America has become so divided that the songs we sing are no longer that of our collective, but rather songs of hatred and division. Whitman spoke for common human identity and he would never support the divided America we live in today.

Hello! What is the cause and effect of world war l?

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

Imperialism is a cause because European countries competed in claiming lands in different continents.  France and England were most successful, especially in the lands they colonized in Africa.  Germany was especially jealous of England's and France’s land claims.

Effect- On August 4, 1914, German forces crossed this edge into Belgium. At the early fight of world war one, the Germans attacked the hard fortified city of Liege, utilizing the most potent weapons in their arsenal—enormous siege cannons—to capture this city by August 15. Giving death and death in their aftermath, including the shot of civilians and the murder of the Belgian priest, whom they accused of instigating civil resistance, the Germans gained through Belgium towards France.

It was caused because of the assassination of arch duke ferdinand and the tension between Austria Hungary and other countries. This led to Germany being in massive debt they didn’t pay off until 2012.
