Read this excerpt from The Riddle of the Rosetta Stone by James Cross Giblin. Once they had mastered the three kinds of Egyptian writing, nineteenth-century scholars had the key to more than three thousand years of Egyptian history. Within a few decades, they compiled an accurate list of all the pharaohs who had ruled Egypt, from Narmer in 3000 B.C. to Cleopatra VII in 30 B.C. They discovered long-lost masterpieces of ancient Egyptian literature. And, by reading bills of sale, shop inventories, and personal letters, they reconstructed what daily life in ancient Egypt was like for everyone from a slave to a king. Which best represents a cause-and-effect relationship from the excerpt? O Nineteenth-century scholars went through documents covering more than three thousand years of Egyptian history. By the late 1970s the federal Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's examinations indicated that Penn Square Bank was overextended. When oil prices dropped in 1981, the situation quickly turned desperate. Depositors withdrew $50 million in May 1982, and by July examiners knew the bank could not survive. They spent the Fourth of July weekend setting up the closure of Penn Square and forming a new bank so that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) could pay the $207 million that was due to insured depositors. Uninsured deposits of $163 million were not paid.

The oil loan shares caused problems for numerous other banks and precipitated a crisis in the entire banking system.

Use ACTIVE to find three questions on the shorts story “up the slide”

Answers

All of these are informed by London's adventurous life, which included stints as a sailor and as a gold prospector in the Klondike region of Alaska, where there was a Gold Rush in the 1890s: the setting of ''Up the Slide''.

We know a few important things about the main character, Clay Dilham: he's young (seventeen) and arrogant. He's traveling with a man named Swanson to the village of Dawson to pick up mail. They've camped for the night when Clay boasts he'll be able to return with a sled full of firewood in just 30 minutes. This young whippersnapper is quite proud that he noticed a dead tree other travelers had overlooked. The only problem? It's high up on Moosehead Mountain, on a steep slide, or rock face, covered in snow.

No biggie, Clay thinks to himself. He knows the frozen river is below the tree and thinks that if he chops it down so it falls on the ice, the trunk will shatter into pieces: firewood ready-to-go. The older, more experienced Swanson just laughs at Clay's boldness. We have the sneaking suspicion that the opening of the story is a sign things won't turn out as planned, that this foreshadows, warning or indication, challenges to come.

Conflict: Man vs. Nature
As soon as Clay begins making his way up the slide, he realizes it's much steeper than he thought, and he regrets wearing slick-soled walrus-skin moccasins instead of more rugged footwear. He reaches a patch of snow-covered grass and keeps slipping on it. The only way he can make it through is by digging his bare hand into the snow and frozen dirt to slowly pull himself up. Finally, he makes it up to his tree, and chopping it down turns out to be the easiest part of the whole ordeal.

Clay looks at the way he came up the slide and realizes he'll just keep slipping and falling if he tries to climb back down. He starts to feel tired, but realizes if he stops moving, he'll freeze in the 30-below weather. Clay has underestimated some of the challenges nature can present and overestimated his ability to handle them. This makes ''Up the Slide'' a classic example of the literary conflict called man vs. nature.

Answer:

Stargirl is the most "manic pixie dream girl" who ever pixie-dreamgirl-ed. She's practically the prototype. She's the Alpha and Omega of the cliche, coined by critic Nathan Rabin in his review of 2005's "Elizabethtown." Stargirl dresses eccentrically, she carries around a ukulele, and her pet rat lives in her knapsack. She drifts above the rituals and pressures of high school, communing on a higher and much wiser plane. She exists in order to change the lives of others for the better. As seen through the eyes of Leo, a shy kid who only wants to fit in, she is nothing less than a Magical Creature. He believes she can actually make it rain. And maybe she can. There's something uncanny about Stargirl.

Answer:

Because kind words bring happiness

Explanation:

A logical order, within a text, refers to the ability of words to show that one situation is so linked to another, that when one happens, the other, logically, happens as a result. This can be seen in the question above, through the line "Because kind words bring happiness." That's because kindness and happiness are very connected, so if someone uses kindness when speaking, logically, it causes happiness in those who heard and in those who spoke.

Both genders work just as hard in their job as everyone else and being payed equally means the same amount of success, everyone deserves to be happy so why not be payed equally? why not have the same pay as everyone else? it shouldn't matter about the gender to be honest, it should depend on the career you choose and how much work you put into it. Imagine being a woman working day and night as a certified doctor and you get less pay as a man working day and night as a certified doctor and they both work just as hard, they both work the same shifts and work just as hard as each other and you realise your getting payed lower just because of your gender. Keep that in mind. Those are my feelings on the gender pay gap.

A text that lists benefits of owning a dog from least Importance to greatest importance uses___________ order.

1. transitional

2.logical

3. chronological

4. spatial

5. climatic

Answers

Answer:

5. climatic

Explanation:

Arranging things in a sequence, where each things precedes or succedes another is called ordering. Ordering can be done in several ways, depending on ordering criteria.

For example, we can arrange events chronologically, which means we arrange them based on the time period when they occured; from the most to the least recent event, or vice versa.

Spatial arrangement means that we list things based on their position in space; from right to left, or from top to bottom.

Logical order is when we place things in a manner that each one logically follows the previous.

However, in this example, we have climatic order, which means that things are arranged in an order from the least important to the most important, making the final thing on the list the most important, or strongest, or the best.

What is the effect of the story's point of view? a first-person narrator like Mrs. Mallard can demonstrate how her opinion changes with her observations. a first-person narrator allows the reader to experience the emotions and feelings Mrs. Mallard is feeling. a third-person omniscient narrator can guide readers through Mrs. Mallard's changing emotions by describing her transition. a third-person limited narrator allows readers to observe only the outward physical response of Mrs. Mallard as she reacts to the events of the story.

Answers

Answer:

A third-person omniscient narrator can guide readers through Mrs. Mallard's changing emotions by describing her transition.

Explanation:

A third-person omniscient narrator/ narrative voice is the point of view from an uninvolved character narrating the sequence of the story. This point of view allows the narrator to present the characters and their feelings without being a part of the story.

In Kate Chopin's "Story of an Hour", the third person omniscient narrator gives us access to the feelings and emotions of Mrs. Mallard. At the same time, we are also guided through her changing emotions and transitions.

Thus, the correct answer is the third option.

Read the excerpt from "The New Marvel in Photography" by H. J. W. Dam.

In all the history of scientific discovery there has never been, perhaps, so general, rapid, and dramatic an effect wrought on the scientific centres of Europe as has followed, in the past four weeks, upon an announcement made to the Würzburg Physico-Medical Society, at their December meeting, by Professor William Konrad Röntgen, professor of physics at the Royal University of Würzburg. The first news which reached London was by telegraph from Vienna to the effect that a Professor Röntgen, until then the possessor of only a local fame in the town mentioned, had discovered a new kind of light, which penetrated and photographed through everything. This news was received with a mild interest, some amusement, and much incredulity; and a week passed. Then, by mail and telegraph, came daily clear indications of the stir which the discovery was making in all the great line of universities between Vienna and Berlin. Then Röntgen's own report arrived, so cool, so business-like, and so truly scientific in character, that it left no doubt either of the truth or of the great importance of the preceding reports. . . .

Exactly what kind of a force Professor Röntgen has discovered he does not know. As will be seen below, he declines to call it a new kind of light, or a new form of electricity. He has given it the name of the X rays.
