British debt doubled as a result of the French and Indian War. The annual cost of maintaining the British army in the thirteen colonies before the war was £13,000. The additional 15 battalions (large number of troops) in North America after the war increased the cost to £220,000. Interest on the debt was £4.4 million per year so just paying the interest concerned King George III and Parliament. The colonies opposed paying for their own defense so Parliament passed a tax to raise revenue to make the colonists provide for their common defense. The tax was called the Stamp Act because it required a stamp to be placed on all printed materials purchased throughout the thirteen colonies. The total amount intended to be raised by the new tax was £60,000 per year, this is not even 20% of the total amount required to maintain the troops.

Document B Analysis—Study the chart and reading to answer the questions. Remember to paraphrase.
1. What is the source of the document? Is it a primary or secondary source? Explain.

2. How did the French and Indian War impact British debt?

3. What was the exact difference in pounds in the debt between 1755 and 1762?

4. How much did it cost to keep British troops in the colonies after the war?

Answers

Answer:

The defeat of the British at the Battle of Fort Duquesne sparked the French and Indian War. The British attacked the French trading fort known as Fort Duquesne on September 14, 1758 (not 1755). This fort, and others, had been constructed in 1754 by the French in the Ohio River Valley as part of their strategy to expand their profitable fur trade, which was based in present-day Canada. The British, however, objected to this usurpation of what they considered was their territory, and, as a result, the Prime Minister, William Pitt, sent General John Forbes and 6,000 soldiers to gain control of the fort. During a reconnaissance mission, Major James Grant and his soldiers tried to attack the fort, but they were defeated by the French and his Indian allies. Aware of their numerical disadvantage, the French decided to retreat, not without burning Fort Duquesne first. Once they eventually left the Ohio Valley, the British built Fort Pitt on the site.

For questions about Document A, here are the answers

Explanation:

1. What is the source of the document?  Is it a primary or secondary source? Explain.

Well, since it was taken FROM the official Stamp Act document it’s a primary source. You know this piece of text is taken from the document because it’s labeled as an “excerpt” at the top.

2. What was the purpose of the Stamp Act, according to the document?

The Stamp Act was “AN ACT for granting and applying certain stamp duties”.

3.  A colonist purchased a pair of dice, a 4-page newspaper, and placed an ad to sell a product in a newspaper. How much in today’s money would that have cost?

You can purchase the following items at these prices. A pair of 6-sided dice 19mm would cost you roughly $8.65. A 4-page newspaper usually goes for around $1.00. Lastly, the most expensive of the purchases would be an ad in the newspaper which costs roughly $12 per inch of newspaper used, meaning that a normal 4-inch by 4-inch ad would cost you $192.00. Assuming that this is exactly what you bought you would end up paying a total of 8.65 + 1.00 + 192.00 = $201.65

: How did the Great Compromise of 1787 show that recognizing a variety of viewpoints benefits all?

Answers

Answer:

The Great Compromise was forged in a heated dispute during the 1787 Constitutional Convention: States with larger populations wanted congressional representation based on population, while smaller states demanded equal representation. To keep the convention from dissolving into chaos, the founding fathers came up with the Great Compromise. The agreement, which created today’s system of congressional representation, now influences everything from “pork barrel” legislation to the way votes are counted in the electoral college during presidential elections.

What economic outcome does Blanc predict resulting from "...the reign of free competition..."?

A. overabundance of cheap imports

B. inferior goods flooding the domestic market

C. continuous decline of wages

D. market preference of hiring cheap unskilled workers

E. monetary inflation

Answers

Answer:

C. continuous decline of wage

Explanation:

In his work titled "Organization of Labor"  published in 1840, Louis Blanc wrote and I quote; "Who would be blind enough not to see that under the reign of free competition the continuous decline of wages necessarily becomes a general law with no exception whatsoever?"

Hence according to the economic theory of Louis Blanc, the reign of free competition leads to the decline of wages.

In the submission of Louis Blank "The government ought to be considered as the supreme regulator of production and endowed for this duty with great power. This task would consist of fighting competition and of finally overcoming it.  The government ought to float a loan with the proceeds of which it should erect social workshops in the most important branches of national industry."

Answers

Question:

What role did Americans play in the Spanish Colonization?

Explanation:

Effective Spanish settlement began in 1493, when Columbus brought livestock, seeds, agricultural equipment. The first settlement of La Navidad, a crude fort built on his first voyage in 1492, had been abandoned by the time he returned in 1493.

In the European race to colonial dominance, the Treaty of Tordesillas legitimized Spain’s holdings in the New World, indicating Spanish primacy over Portugal.

The successes of Columbus ushered in an era of Spanish conquest that led numerous other European explorers to attempt similar colonization projects.

Spain gained immense wealth from this expansionism, which translated into an influx of Spanish art and cultural capital.

What options are available to the President if he disagrees with a bill presented for signature, following its passage by both chambers of Congress?
A
The President has no options and must sign the bill into law once it has passed both chambers of Congress.

B
The bill will not become law if the President does not sign it.

C
The President can send the bill to the States for ratification, knowing it will be defeated.

D
The President can use a pocket veto when Congress is not in session.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation: The President may veto bills Congress passes, but Congress may also override a veto by a two-thirds vote in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Article I of the Constitution enumerates the powers of Congress and the specific areas in which it may legislate.

If the President disagrees with a bill presented for signature, following its passage by both chambers of Congress, he can choose not to sign the bill into law. This action is known as a veto. Hence option B is correct .

What options are available to the President if he disagrees with a bill ?

Once the President has vetoed the bill, Congress can try to override the veto with a two-thirds vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. If they succeed, the bill becomes law without the President's signature. If they fail to override the veto, the bill dies.

Another option available to the President is to use a pocket veto. A pocket veto occurs when the President does not sign the bill and Congress adjourns before the ten-day period in which the President has to sign or veto the bill expires. In this case, the bill does not become law, as it would if the President had simply vetoed it.

However, a pocket veto is only possible if Congress is not in session. If Congress is in session, the President must either sign or veto the bill.

Thus option B is correct .

A wealthy estate near a river's incorrect answer location would be most attractive to a Viking raiding party. Thus option B is correct.

What is raiding?

A planned but unanticipated police entry into a location to look for something or put an end to unlawful behavior is known as a raid.

The early targets of Viking assaults were Christian monks in England rather than the Frankish Kingdom; instead, they ravaged along the shores and up the rivers. To the scholar John Sawyer, those are raided not for any religious motives but rather because they were wealthy centers with very well farms.

The people usually raided the countries that were wealthy. They were taking the gold, silver, and food. There were various raids that were carried out over many years. Therefore, option B is the correct option.

What did the mccarthyism pattern reveal about the nature of American anxiety in 1950

Answers

Answer:

The fact that McCarthyism was so widespread and powerful tells us that American anxiety was extremely strong back then. After the World War II, the U.S. were victorious, but so were the Soviets. So, the two great economic and political powers opposed each other from the ideological point of view: communist vs. capitalist propaganda took place. McCarthyism didn't just try to protect the American way of life and capitalist ideology. It ascertained that everyone who wasn't for it was in fact against it, thereby declaring enemies everywhere, instilling fear and paranoia into every citizen. In the course of establishing the cultural notion of "American dream", the red anti-capitalist discourse (which had already been present in popular culture) was unwelcome and had to be banished.
