Use the passage below to answer parts A, B, and C of the question that follows.

"Ronald Reagan was widely eulogized for having won the cold war, liberated Eastern Europe and pulled the plug on the Soviet Union. Margaret Thatcher, Joe Lieberman, John McCain, Charles Krauthammer and other notables offered variations of The Economist’s cover headline: ‘The Man Who Beat Communism.’

Actually, Jack F. Matlock Jr. writes in Reagan and Gorbachev, it was ‘not so simple.’ . . . . In both the title of his memoir and the story it tells, he gives co-star billing to Mikhail Gorbachev.

Reagan himself went even farther. Asked at a press conference in Moscow in 1988, his last year in office, about the role he played in the great drama of the late 20th century, he described himself essentially as a supporting actor. ‘Mr. Gorbachev,’ he said, ‘deserves most of the credit, as the leader of this country.’”

Excerpt from Strobe Talbott’s 2004 review of Reagan and Gorbachev: How the Cold War Ended by Jack F. Matlock Jr., the senior coordinator of policy toward the Soviet Union under President Reagan

a) Identify ONE specific example of how historians might argue that the end of the Cold War was attributable to Reagan’s policies and US pressure.

b) Identify ONE specific example of how historians might argue that the end of the Cold War was attributable to Gorbachev’s leadership.

c) Identify ONE reason (other than partisanship), based on the events of the last decade of the Cold War, that historians might still debate the respective influences of Reagan and Gorbachev on the end of the Cold War.

A) One specific example of how historians might argue that the end of the Cold War was due to Reagan’s policies and US pressure is the fact that during his presidency, he increased relations with the Soviet Union, while simultaneously building up the American army as both a backup plan and to prepare for a potential arms race, which put pressure on the Soviet Union. Reagan also proposed treaties between the USSR, simultaneously putting pressure on the USSR, essentially forcing them to enter into some sort of treaty or else they will enter an arms race that they likely wouldn’t win.

B) One specific example of how historians might argue that the end of the Cold War was a result of Gorbachev’s leadership was the fact that he instituted a lot of reforms that made the country more capitalist than before, and also more democratic, which pleased the rest of the world and increased foreign relations. He attempted to ease tensions within the country and it’s satellite states, and started to distance the country from authoritarian rule to move towards a system more suitable for the current world. These new reforms increased foreign relations, and led to the end of the Cold War.

C) One reason that historians might still debate the respective influences of Reagan and Gorbachev on the end of the Cold War is that fact that while they both contributed to it, there were a lot of other factors at play during that time period. It is often stated by historians, particularly in this case some historians at The Belfer Center at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that even if Gorbachev had not instituted the reforms that he did, the communist ideology would likely have still dissolved in the USSR. So even if Gorbachev didn’t become president and put those reforms in place to decrease the influence of the communist ideology of the people, it still would have likely happened anyway. On the other hand, one could argue that Reagan didn’t have much of an influence on the end of the Cold War either, as he himself even states that without Gorbachev, the end of the Cold War wouldn’t have been possible. He simply made decisions that were advantageous at the time that were essentially put in place for him. Those are both sides of the argument that many historians have about the influence of each leader on the end of the Cold War.

A contested presidential election
The Compromise of 1877 resolved the tumult that had arisen following the 1876 presidential election. In that election, Democratic candidate Samuel J. Tilden of New York won 247,448 more popular votes than Republican Rutherford B. Hayes of Ohio. But the electoral votes in the three southern states of Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina were disputed. For almost four months, from November into late February, tensions remained high as the question of who was to become the nation’s next president remained unresolved. Rutherford B. Hayes won the contested election of 1876 as a result of the Compromise of 1877. Image courtesy Library of Congress.
In January 1877, Congress established a 15-member Electoral Commission to resolve the issue of which candidate had won the contested states. The commission voted 8-7 along party lines to award the votes of all three states to Hayes. As the commission deliberated, members of Congress and others made their own efforts to end the crisis, but no written, formal agreements resulted. The presidency in return for home rule in the South. During Reconstruction, the period after the Civil War when the South reorganized its political, social, and economic systems to account for the end of slavery, federal troops occupied the South. These troops served to guarantee African American men's right to vote, and the Republican-controlled federal government would only end the military occupation when states rewrote their Constitutions to recognize the citizenship and voting rights of African American men. White Southerners generally despised these troops, and wanted an end to the intervention of the federal government in the South. The Compromise of 1877 gave white Southerners their chance to stop the military occupation of the South. In the compromise, Southern Democrats agreed not to block the vote by which Congress awarded the contested electoral votes to Rutherford B. Hayes, and Hayes therefore became president. In return, Republicans agreed to withdraw federal troops from actively intervening in the politics of Louisiana and South Carolina (the last two states occupied by federal troops). Accordingly, within two months of becoming president, Hayes ordered federal troops in Louisiana and South Carolina to return to their bases. Cartoon showing a Southern veteran and a Northern veteran (missing a leg) shaking hands over a tombstone that reads "In Memory of Union Heroes in a Useless War." In the background, an African American family kneels in chains. This Thomas Nast cartoon, published in 1864, suggested that compromising with the South was tantamount to betraying the Union dead. Image courtesy Library of Congress. The removal of the federal soldiers from the streets and from statehouse offices signaled the end of the Republican Party’s commitment to protecting the civil and political rights of African Americans, and marked a major political turning point in American history: it ended Reconstruction. Another important part of the Compromise of 1877 was that Republicans agreed to home-rule in the South. Home-rule meant that the Republican Party would refrain from interfering in the South’s local affairs, and that white Democrats, many of them racist, would rule. Southern Democrats, for their part, pledged that they would “recognize the civil and political equality of blacks.” They did not subsequently carry through on this promise but instead disfranchised black men from voting and imposed Jim Crow segregation across the South. In all, with the Compromise of 1877, the Republican Party abandoned the last remnant of its support for equal rights for African Americans in the South. With the withdrawal of federal troops went any hope of reconstructing the South as a racially-egalitarian society after the end of slavery. As Henry Adams, a black Louisianan, lamented, “The whole South—every state in the South—had got into the hands of the very men that held us as slaves.” In the aftermath of the Compromise of 1877, a few African Americans in some areas of the South continued to vote and serve in government offices into the 1890s, but the Compromise of 1877 marked the effective end of the Republican Party’s active support of civil rights for black Americans. Southern states rapidly passed laws disenfranchising African Americans and implementing racial segregation.
1. What did the Compromise of 1877 mean for African Americans?
2. Did the white Southern Democrats who promised that they would recognize civil and political rights for African Americans as part of the Compromise of 1877 hold true to this promise?
3. Why do you think the Republican Party gave up on supporting civil rights for African Americans in this era?

Since she is a first-time offender, my personal preference is that she be penalized for being required to perform community service. This would only be feasible if she underwent a mental health evaluation to ensure that her mental health is in good standing.

She could have been experiencing mental stress, which is why she was acting erratically. If this were the case, she should be sent to a mental hospital where she would get treatment before facing any more punishment.

Yet the growth of communications technology allows people today to find more information more easily than any previous generation. Mass media can be print, radio, television, or Internet news. They can be local, national, or international. They can be broad or limited in their focus. The choices are tremendous.

Answer:

Modern media is now a biased institution that can have some negative impacts on today's society and governmental procedures. As the media has become more and more biased, different government parties have started to become more aggressive to point out their policies. State armed forces and organisations not under direct government control around the world recruit children.

Children are more frequently used in armed conflict by non-state armed organisations than by nations. Because these organisations are less visible and more difficult to engage with, it is harder to solve the problem.

There are various ways that kids become warriors. Some are hired under duress. Others are lured in with promises of money, drugs, or other inducements, while others may be kidnapped, threatened, or forced to join. The decision to join is frequently influenced by social or economic forces. Others enlist in the military to fight for an issue that they or their family believe in, frequently without fully comprehending the consequences of their choice.

Children are more likely to be recruited when they are poor, dispersed, separated from their relatives, or live in a battle zone. For a variety of reasons, armed groups target children. They require less food, are simpler to control, and lack a highly evolved sense of threat.

The media had a significant impact on how the public perceived the Emmett Till case. The murder of Emmett Till drew widespread attention in newspapers, magazines, and on television, highlighting the brutality of racism in the United States.

Who was Emmett Till?

Emmett Till was a 14-year-old African-American boy who was brutally murdered in August 1955 in Money, Mississippi.0

Till was on his way home from Chicago when he allegedly whistled at a white woman named Carolyn Bryant in a grocery store.

what are two reasons to why the prohibition of alcohol in the 20th century failed?

Answers

National prohibition of alcohol (1920–33) — the “noble experiment” — was undertaken to reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, reduce the tax burden created by prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. The results of that experiment clearly indicate that it was a miserable failure on all counts. The evidence affirms sound economic theory, which predicts that prohibition of mutually beneficial exchanges is doomed to failure. The lessons of Prohibition remain important today. They apply not only to the debate over the war on drugs but also to the mounting efforts to drastically reduce access to alcohol and tobacco and to such issues as censorship and bans on insider trading, abortion, and gambling.1

Although consumption of alcohol fell at the beginning of Prohibition, it subsequently increased. Alcohol became more dangerous to consume; crime increased and became “organized”; the court and prison systems were stretched to the breaking point; and corruption of public officials was rampant. No measurable gains were made in productivity or reduced absenteeism. Prohibition removed a significant source of tax revenue and greatly increased government spending. It led many drinkers to switch to opium, marijuana, patent medicines, cocaine, and other dangerous substances that they would have been unlikely to encounter in the absence of Prohibition.

Those results are documented from a variety of sources, most of which, ironically, are the work of supporters of Prohibition — most economists and social scientists supported it. Their findings make the case against Prohibition that much stronger. Hope this helps! Mark brainly please!
